A Return to Wrigley: Anders Sörensen’s Unique Perspective on the Winter Classic
Anders Sörensen vividly remembers his first experience at the NHL winter Classic. Perched high in the stands at Wrigley field in 2009,he watched as his former player,Samuelsson, scored a power-play goal against the Blackhawks.
“It was an astounding atmosphere,” Sörensen recalled. “The energy in the stadium was palpable, even from our seats near the top. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, despite the freezing temperatures.”
While the 2023 Winter Classic promises a different weather experience, with forecasts predicting a mix of snow and rain and wind gusts up to 40 kilometers per hour, the excitement surrounding the event remains.
Sörensen’s 2009 visit to Wrigley Field wasn’t limited to the game itself. He had the opportunity to witness the preparations firsthand the day before, attending the Red Wings’ practice with his son.
“My son, Anton, was seven at the time,” Sörensen shared. “We were planning to visit the Red Wings’ locker room, but he decided he’d rather have hot chocolate from Starbucks rather. So, we went there.”
This year’s Winter Classic holds a special meaning for Sörensen. After joining the Blackhawks organization in 2013 as a development coach,he spent five seasons honing young talent. In 2018, he transitioned to the role of head coach for the Rockford IceHogs in the American Hockey League.
His journey culminated in December 2023 when he was appointed interim head coach of the Blackhawks, replacing Luke Richardson. now, Sörensen faces the challenge of guiding the struggling Blackhawks towards consistency and success.
Since taking over, the team’s record has improved slightly, moving from 8-16-2 to 4-7-0.
This Winter Classic marks a milestone for Sörensen,as he prepares to coach his first NHL game outdoors. It’s a moment he couldn’t have foreseen just a few months ago, adding another layer of excitement to this already historic event.

Anders: It was truly amazing. The atmosphere was electric, even from our seats way up high. Seeing the Red Wings play the Blackhawks in such a unique setting was a memory I’ll never forget. And of course, Sammy [Samuelsson] scoring that power-play goal? Unforgettable.

Anders: It’s surreal, to be honest. To think that just a few years ago, I was watching the Classic wiht my son, and now I’m going to be coaching in it is truly amazing. Obviously, there are some nerves, especially with the challenging weather conditions expected, but mostly I’m excited for the opportunity.
Moderator: You mentioned your son. He opted for hot chocolate over a locker room visit back than, right?
Anders: Absolutely! At seven years old, hot chocolate always wins. Maybe I should bring him another cup this year for good luck!

Anders: It’s been a challenging season, there’s no doubt whatsoever. But I’ve seen glimpses of what this team is capable of. We’ve made some improvements since I took over, and my focus is on building consistency and helping these players reach their full potential. This Winter Classic is a chance for us to make a statement, and I believe we’re up for the challenge.

Anders: It’s going to be a real test of our players’ tenacity and adaptability. We’ve been preparing for these conditions, but there’s no doubt it will be challenging. It might very well be a real battle out there, and whoever can handle the elements best will likely come out on top.
