Hereford’s boys lacrosse team holds on to beat Chesapeake 8-6 in Class 2A state quarterfinal despite a late rally.

The Cougars have shown their ability to come back from a large deficit. In a game two weeks ago, Glen Burnie was leading by four goals at halftime, but Chesapeake managed to turn the game around and secure a victory with a final score of 11-10.

Scoring: HF – Revitte with 2 goals, Manakil with 2 goals, Kittner with 2 goals, McGee with 1 goal, Goetz with 1 goal; CH – Behler with 2 goals, Wheeler with 2 goals, Kopp with 2 goals; Assists: HF – Revitte with 1 assist, Manakil with 1 assist, Kittner with 1 assist, J. Bush with 1 assist; Saves: HF – C. Bush with 8 saves; CH – Cappe with 3 saves.

The clanging cowbells that accompanied the Hereford boys lacrosse team’s quick victory in the Class 2A state quarterfinals had stopped, replaced by cheers from the Chesapeake team’s bench.

Revitte expressed that the speed and severity at which things can go wrong was evident in the game. There were various possibilities where the outcome could have been different, which will serve as a lesson for tomorrow’s practice.

After dropping to the 2A category, Brown saw an opportunity for his program to make significant progress. None of the Cougars boys teams had ever secured a regional championship, but this one achieved it two days ago.

“This year, our program saw continuous participation from 50 individuals. It was a successful year, not only for the varsity team, but also for the JV team, who competed in the county championship. While we faced some occasional challenges, they ultimately prepared us for the tough competition we faced tonight,” Brown expressed.

Unfortunately, The Bulls (13-3) have experienced the disappointment of losing their chances at the state championship in devastating fashion in the past. However, being challenged by a strong team like Chesapeake and being pushed back on their heels served as a necessary but difficult wake up call.
Coach Brian Brown stated that they increased their physicality, which helped them gain control. However, it was not enough and their slow start ultimately caused their defeat.

However, with a halftime score of 1-5 and 1-8 only eight minutes into the second half, the Cougars were forced to act quickly. They aggressively pursued ground balls, defended against opposing attacks, and made shots on goal, resulting in a surge of electrifying energy that drained Hereford’s momentum.

Chances for Hereford increased as the game progressed. When the ball came loose, Chesapeake hesitated to pursue it while the Bulls were drawn towards it like a magnet.

“We simply required that period to establish a connection,” stated Kyle Leppert, “and remain calm.”

The Bulls were unclear on how they allowed it to occur. Their advantage of four goals at halftime had rapidly increased to seven in the third quarter. Senior attacker JP Revitte fired in his second goal, let out a loud shout, and pumped his hand. The Cougars had not managed to hinder Hereford from controlling the pace of the game, obtaining every ground ball and taking shots without obstacle.

The intense excitement of the bubbling blowout suddenly dissipated, leaving them feeling low. In a few swift moves by Cougar players, their hopes of reaching the state semifinals turned into a nightmarish experience.

Ryan Kopp was unable to score a potential goal that would have narrowed Chesapeake’s lead by two. This missed opportunity gave the Bulls a chance for redemption. With only five minutes remaining, Hereford’s only option was to maintain possession of the ball and hold onto their lead, and in turn, their season, by keeping it securely in their attacking players’ sticks.

Leppert stated that it was crucial to regain ground balls as it contributed to longer possessions and offensive success.

Patience was no longer necessary as Brenden Kittner quickly responded to his teammate’s attempt and the gates opened swiftly. Despite Chesapeake’s attempts at faceoffs and shots, they were unable to break through the defense of Hereford’s keeper, Caleb Bush. Additionally, every individual rocket shot launched by the Bulls, including those by Revitte, Kittner, and others, were precise and on target. Chesapeake had 11 scoreless minutes to set the tone against Hereford, until its defenders made their fatal mistake. Not one figure in white chased senior Jay Goetz as a loose ball ricocheted toward midfield. Goetz galloped back into the fray and cleaved through Cougar and Bull alike to, at last, break the ice for a 1-0 lead.Hereford — 2 3 3 0 — 8

Revitte stated that we were fortunate to successfully maintain the situation, as the clock was on our side. Although we faced some difficulties, we managed to persevere.

Despite the presence of defenders from Chesapeake such as Nick Paciello, the Bulls were able to hold onto their lead and secure an 8-6 win. As the game clock approached its final seconds, the Hereford team eagerly awaited their victory and Revitte briefly paused before joining in the celebrations.

“We made our best effort, but ultimately were outperformed by a more experienced team.”Chesapeake gathered three-straight faceoffs and refused to surrender possessions. Kopp, Talan Behler and Nathan Wheeler peppered shots until each secured the goals they sought to bring it within 8-5 shortly into the fourth.Chesapeake — 0 1 3 2 — 6
