Isaac Kimeli demolishes the mythical barrier of 13 minutes at 5,000m and is allowed to go to Paris

Only one Belgian managed to dive under 13 minutes on the 5,000 meters. Mohammed Mourhit set the Belgian record at 12’49″71, although he fell off his pedestal as a doping sinner.

During his first 5,000 meters of the season, Isaac Kimeli was also able to demolish that mythical barrier. He clocked 12’56″53, a serious chunk of his personal best that had stood at 13’04″72 since 2022.

With his excellent time he passes Monder Riziki and John Heymans and is now the 2nd fastest Belgian ever in the 5,000 meters. He is now 8th in the all-time European rankings. In 2024 it will be the fourth fastest time worldwide and the fastest European time.

It also gives Kimeli an Olympic ticket for the Games in Paris. The Olympic limit was 13’05”. Kimeli can also run the 5,000 meters at the European Championships.
