After OM’s defeat this Wednesday evening in Reims (1-0), Jean-Louis Gasset, the Marseille coach, let his anger burst forth.

“I feel a sense of shame. Once again, the team was not up to par with Olympique de Marseille away from home.”, lamented OM coach Jean-Louis Gasset after his team’s defeat in Reims (1-0) on Wednesday. Marseille could pass Lens and Lyon and move up to sixth place, qualifying for a European competition, during this late match on the 32nd day of Ligue 1.

Instead, this defeat seriously complicates its European ambitions before the 34th and final day of the championship on Sunday. Trailing after half an hour of play, the Marseille club never managed to revolt, missing out on their match.

“We had the opportunity to open a door for Europe, but once again, we were bad,” regretted Gasset. I can’t understand how players opposite who aren’t playing anything are more aggressive than us.”

To hope to obtain European qualification, Marseille will have to win at Le Havre on Sunday and hope for a misstep from at least one of their direct opponents. The Marseille coach hardly believes in this scenario, which would nevertheless constitute a good note before his departure: “I would have liked to leave Marseille in the European Cup. We will have to take stock and make good corrections because it’s really difficult to never be up to par outside.”

For his part, Leonardo Balerdi did not hide his disappointment by using harsh words: “There is no explanation, we are not up to par, I don’t know… The supporters and the club deserve much better. It’s a bit like our entire season, we have to accept it. We did some shit. For self-esteem, you have to win the last match.
