Griezmann secures the Champions League

Atlético, with a hat trick from the Frenchman, extends its good streak against Getafe and adds its fourth straight victory

MADRID, 15 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Atlético de Madrid confirmed its presence in the next edition of the Champions League after beating Getafe this Wednesday by a clear 0-3, thanks to the return of the best version of Antoine Griezmann, author of the three red and white goals in the Coliseum in a placid clash for the visitors.

Although they had it in their hand, the red and white team did not want to wait any longer and certified the club’s already main objective. He did it at home, his Achilles heel this year, and he did it with unusual authority as a visitor, led by his ‘7’, once again the protagonist in putting an end to the bad moment that he had been going through since the beginning of January.

The one from Macon smiled again and Diego Pablo Simeone was able to breathe, although with two games remaining he can still encourage his team to try to overtake Girona, which has two even in third place. FC Barcelona is further away, but if they stumble against bottom team Almería it could open up an option even for runners-up.

José Bordalás still can’t find a way to beat ‘Cholo’ and crashed against the Argentine again for the twelfth time. The blue team barely had any options, those generated by Mason Greenwood, an improvised ‘false 9’ and who had the two best, the first at the beginning of the match and with 0-0, and where he lacked more skill after a good maneuver, and a better one at 0-1, but with Oblak putting in a great hand to deflect his powerful shot off the crossbar.

That was the best offensive thing for the Getafense team, with no other objectives than to add the maximum number of points and with the appearance of being very low on energy. This was not wasted by a serious Atlético with more quality up front, with Ángel Correa whose mobility was a headache for the center backs.

It took a while for the colchoneros to get the hang of the match, but they didn’t forgive the first clear shot they had. Rodrigo de Paul drew a great pass into space and Griezmann appeared there to stand alone against David Soria and shoot quality to make it 0-1 and almost end his rival’s resistance.

GRIEZMANN SENTENCE

Getafe tried to react and were able to tie with the aforementioned Greenwood, but they went to the locker room with more of a disadvantage. Another good pass from De Paul, in this case in the vicinity of the area, ended with Correa making a ‘pass of death’ that Lino did not reach, but Griezmann did to make it 0-2. The referee whistled for offside, but the VAR ended up validating the ‘7’s double.

Bordalás looked for more offensive bite after the break and made a triple change with the entry of Mata, Latasa and Jordi Martín, but he was barely able to generate too much danger on Oblak’s goal. Furthermore, Griezmann did not relax and ended any attempt at excitement with his hat trick to equal, despite doubts about his performance, the 16 goals in the League from last year.

From there, Getafe sank a little more, while Atlético also gradually eased up as the minutes passed and without threatening David Soria too much. The locals were unable to score to fuel the final stretch and their rival confirmed their improvement with their fourth consecutive victory, the third without conceding.
