Down to the Wire: Bundesliga Survival at Stake for Four Clubs on Final Matchday

The 34th and final Bundesliga matchday is on Saturday, and not all decisions have been made yet. Especially in the table cellar. Four clubs act between hope and fear in the last 90 minutes.

In the top half of the table, the decisions have almost been made; with a draw, FC Bayern can secure the runner-up position ahead of VfB Stuttgart, just as Frankfurt can secure sixth place in the long-distance duel with Hoffenheim. However, there is tension in the lower half of the table. Who will accompany SV Darmstadt 98 straight into the 2nd Bundesliga? Who has a chance of staying in the league via relegation? And who will directly hold the league?

The questions are answered by VfL Bochum (33 points), 1. FSV Mainz 05 (32), 1. FC Union Berlin (30) and 1. FC Köln (27). So with a view to staying in the league, Bochum starts the race from pole position, for Cologne the only option is, ideally, relegation. “I’ve never been good at math,” FC coach Timo Schultz doesn’t want to use the slide rule: “We’ll win next week and then we’ll see.” Cologne has to do that too. The situation in the fight to stay in the league:

1. FC Köln is relegated directly…
… in a defeat on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) at 1. FC Heidenheim.
… with a draw in Heidenheim.

1. FC Cologne goes into relegation…
… in the event of a win in Heidenheim and Union’s defeat at the same time, both would be tied. And FC will only be in relegation if they can have the better goal difference, which currently speaks for Union (-29 to -26).

If the goal difference is also the same, as is the number of goals scored, then the direct comparison would speak in favor of Union, which beat Effzeh 2-0 in Berlin but “only” lost 2-3 in Cologne last Saturday.

Union Berlin is relegated straight away…
… in the event of a defeat against Freiburg and a Cologne victory in Freiburg, provided that Union then has a worse goal difference compared to FC or has fewer goals scored with the same goal difference.

Union Berlin goes into relegation…
… in the event of a defeat against Freiburg, if Cologne wins in Heidenheim but has the worse goal difference.
… in a draw against Freiburg.
… in a win against Freiburg, if Mainz scores in Wolfsburg and Bochum scores in Bremen.

Union Berlin manages to stay in the league…
… in a win against Freiburg, if Bochum loses in Bremen or Mainz loses in Wolfsburg.

1. FSV Mainz 05 has to go into relegation…
… with a defeat in Wolfsburg and a Union win against Freiburg.

1. FSV Mainz 05 manages to stay in the league…
… in a draw in Wolfsburg, Union shouldn’t win by twelve goals against Freiburg, which probably won’t be the case.

VfL Bochum goes into relegation…
… in the event of a defeat in Bremen, if Mainz scores in Wolfsburg and Union wins against Freiburg.

VfL Bochum manages to stay in the league…
… with a draw or win in Bremen.
