Bayern coach Tuchel has been saying for weeks that there is an agreement to separate from the record champions in the summer. The bosses cannot find a successor. Is there now a surprising turnaround?

According to consistent media reports, FC Bayern bosses now surprisingly want to persuade coach Thomas Tuchel to stay in Munich.

Sports director Max Eberl and sports director Christoph Freund are negotiating with the coach as to whether he wants to reverse the early separation, as reported by “Bild”, “Kicker” and the TV station Sky. There was no reaction from the football record champions to the reports about the spectacular turnaround in the search for a coach.

Bayern and Tuchel announced in February that they would terminate the contract, which actually runs until 2025, after this season. Since then, however, the club has been unable to find a successor and some candidates have declined. Tuchel, in turn, led the team to the semi-finals of the Champions League and, according to reports, has some supporters in the team. He himself had recently always said that the agreement stood.

Now there are increasing signs that the 50-year-old needs to be changed. “Bild” published photos in which Tuchel’s advisor Olaf Meinking can be seen at the office on Säbener Strasse on Wednesday. In one picture he looks out the window next to his friend; In another picture you can see that there is a conversation with Bavaria’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen in an office.

Sky reported that Tuchel was open to staying and had communicated this to individual players. Those who want to keep the coach include captain Manuel Neuer, veteran Thomas Müller, goalscorer Harry Kane and national player Jamal Musiala.

However, given some of the events of the past few weeks, Tuchel could make his stay subject to conditions. Bayern patron Uli Hoeneß recently accused him of wanting to sign new players for a lot of money rather than developing young professionals – this made Tuchel feel like his coaching honor had been violated. The Krumbach native may want a clear statement from all bosses – including Hoeneß – that they are convinced of him.

Hoeneß open to contract extension?

It seems unclear whether Tuchel only wants to stay for one year until the end of his current contract. As a result, he could be labeled as a placeholder for coaches who become vacant in 2025, such as Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen or Jürgen Klopp, who wants to take a year off after leaving Liverpool. Tuchel is probably looking for a contract extension in order to stay. This would not fundamentally oppose Hoeneß if there was a consensus in the club, the “Kicker” reported, referring to people who are close to the long-time manager and current supervisory board.
