Alison Jackson Wins Stage 1 of The Women’s Tour in Vuelta Femenina

The Women’s Tour

14:05 Buñol – 17:30 Moncofa

A disrupted sprint was food for outsiders in the Vuelta Femenina. Alison Jackson showed herself to be the cunningest of the bunch. The Canadian ex-winner of Paris-Roubaix had the biggest explosion of power in her legs and celebrated the victory for EF with a dance. Blanka Vas (SD Worx-Protime) has to settle for second place, but does take the leader’s jersey.

On paper, the first stage in line was one for the sprinters. Many teams wanted to prevent that and there was a fierce battle for the escape.

Ultimately, 6 riders were able to get away, including the Belgians Valerie Demey and Audrey De Keersmaeker.

DSM-firminich decided to play it safe and checked in the peloton. That was fully in service of great favorite Charlotte Kool. The leading group did not get more than 3 minutes.

A climb 40 kilometers from the finish caused nervousness in the peloton. As a result, the gap quickly narrowed.

Visma – Lease a Bike, which relies on Marianne Vos for this Vuelta, set a strong pace on the uphill. It was the death knell for the leading group, but also for Charlotte Kool.

The Dutch let go and did not return. Several teams in the peloton rode in the lead to hold off Kool, with success.

There weren’t many turns in the last kilometers, but the rain did make the roads slippery. That caused falls. When entering the last 3 kilometers a group crashed. Marianne Vos, among others, had quit.

A little later the peloton broke through another crash at a roundabout. Gaia Realini, among others, had stopped there.

A thinned out platoon came together again. Kristen Faulkner launched Alison Jackson. The Canadian champion saw Vas and Swinkels come next to her, but the win went to Jackson.

It is her first victory since her surprising triumph in Paris-Roubaix last year.

The leader’s jersey now belongs to Blanka Vas, who took bonus seconds both along the way and at the finish. Gaia Realini loses the red.

The stage winner was ecstatic after the finish

Jackson: “I knew no one would bring it up”

Alison Jackson: “I felt the fire to win this race. I was just in the right position at the right time thanks to my team. There were riders falling all around me, but our group was spared from it. Then my team sprinted.” and I knew that no one would come over. We are becoming a close-knit group. We are now showing that in the Vuelta. Everyone believed in me – from staff to riders. “

Phase by phase

EF was the only one that could provide real sprint preparation. That was employed by Alison Jackson. The Canadian held off Vas and Swinkels in the sprint. Blanka Vas will be the new leader in the Vuelta Femenina.

Jackson is the fastest in the disrupted sprint.

Alison Jackson wint!

EF’s Canadian champion beats Vas and is victorious. After the finish she is very happy.

Eric is grabbed, just like the five pursuers. So it will be a sprint, but will it be possible to escape the crashes?

Eric solo

In the penultimate kilometer, Jelena Eric is alone in the lead. Five are nearby.

Another fall!

There is now a fairly large fall at a roundabout. This causes holes.

About ten riders crash at the sign of the last 3 kilometers. Niamh Fisher-Black, among others, has quit, but she won’t waste any time.

Is Kool still coming?

There is no immediate team that takes the lead in the peloton. People mainly wait for the last kilometer. Kool and co. hang on 20 seconds.

At 5 kilometers from the finish, the pace disappears from the peloton, which is now riding wide across the road. This brings the Kool group closer again, but the difference is too big.

Canyon SRAM moves up. That will be employed by Maike van der Duin. Kasia Niewiadoma’s team came to this Vuelta with 5 riders instead of 7 due to illness.

Moncofar

Finish location Moncofar is hosting a cycling race for the first time. The coastal municipality has about 6,000 inhabitants. A peloton of about 80 riders is approaching. Another 7 kilometers!

Another 10 kilometers

EF, Movistar and Liv-Jayco in particular are now active in the front row of the peloton. The final is not that technical. The last bend is 800 meters from the end.

Who will seize the opportunity?

Without Charlotte Kool, Marianne Vos is on paper the fastest woman in the peloton. Competition will have to come from Georgia Baker, Emma Norsgaard, Maike van der Duin, Rachele Barbieri and Blanka Vas. And what can the young Belgian Marith Vanhove do?

Over and out for Kool

We can write off Charlotte Kool for the stage victory, because the peloton is going too fast. The group with the Dutch sprinter follows at 45 seconds.

Riders from Liv-Jayco, EF and Visma are firmly at the head of the peloton. That is to hold off the group with Charlotte Kool.

Dijkstra grabbed

The Dutch woman was not allowed to lead the way for long. The peloton overtakes her just over 20 kilometers from the end. Meanwhile, Charlotte has to chase Kool. She did not survive the climb and ended up in a second group.

Not Vollering, but Vas

It was not the Dutch champion Demi Vollering, but the Hungarian champion Blanka Vas who was the strongest in the peloton. She kept Grace Brown off. Vas takes 4 bonus seconds and is now virtual leader.

Vollering takes bonuses

Dijkstra was the first to pass in the intermediate sprint. Behind that there was a tough sprint. Demi Vollering and Marianne Vos mingled. We are still waiting for the results.
