As in the first two confrontations between these teams, everything was decided in the last seconds of a match which was mainly worth the suspense and its intensity. And, as was the case at the beginning of January, victory went to the Lions of Geneva for the second time.
The Pommier players, long manhandled by Union Neuchâtel (51-58, 33rd), made the difference thanks to their leaders (Bryan Colon, Paul Gravet and Matthew Dentlinger) in the last three minutes. But it was complicated for the Genevans, who are still struggling to find chemistry and exploit their enormous potential.
It was therefore not this Tuesday that the young guns of the Lions were able to play a few minutes of play. As always, they remained biting their nails on the bench while on the floor Dragan Andrejevic’s star players once again suffered a lot, as has been the case in every meeting for several weeks, facing the defense in the opposing zone without the Pommier coach finding the solution.
Although it was the 22nd championship match, we still have the impression that they are in the running-in phase, even if there are streaks of light in the grayness.
Seven points ahead
After a strong start to the match (11-6, 4th) for the Grand-Saconnex club, the game took off in the hands of the Neuchâtelois thanks to the skill of Nathaniel West and Dalan Ancrum, very comfortable behind the three-point line.
After hanging on to the Genevans for a long time, the visitors took control of the match just before the break (29-32), before being up to seven lengths ahead (33-40) in the 23rd in front of the Lions always so harmless and without response to rectify the situation.
Have the prayers of Teranga, the Apple Tree mascot, been heard? It was ultimately Bryan Colon, the former Neuchâtel player, who took responsibility, like Matt Dentlinger and Paul Gravet, to turn the match around. But the Genevans, who jumped to third place, were hot.
