Scary Moment in Third League Game: Viktoria Köln Player Collapses, Prompting Concern and Solidarity from Both Sides

Bad scenes in the third league.

In the game between Jahn Regensburg and Viktoria Köln there was a scary moment in the 49th minute when the score was 1-0. The game ended 1:1.

Viktoria player Simon Handle (30) falls to the ground in front of Regensburg’s home corner, collapses and lies there in a daze for minutes.

After a standard from Jahns, Handle remains lying down and his teammates form a circle around him.

The Cologne player is treated by paramedics and there is an oppressive silence in the stadium. After eight minutes it is at least clear: Handle is conscious and responsive, he is being transported from the field strapped to a stretcher.

The 7,104 spectators applauded encouragingly. The game is back on track in the 59th minute.

Particularly bad: Only recently did Jahn mourn the tragic death of Agyemang Diawusie, who died at the age of just 25.

After the shock of Handle, the Cologne team got a deserved equalizer in the eighth minute of stoppage time through joker Jonah Sticker. The goalscorer said to “Magenta Sport”: “The goal and the point are also for Simon.” Team colleague Lars Dietz: “I heard that he is stable. I hope that nothing remains. Unfortunately, this sort of thing happens in football. Simon is a fighter.” Jahn coach Joe Enochs: “I only saw a group. Thank God he’s fine. I wish you a speedy recovery from this point.”

After the game it was announced: Handle will stay in the hospital in Regensburg overnight for observation, he will be accompanied by a Viktoria physio and should return on Monday. Cologne’s sports director Franz Wunderlich told BILD: “During the action, Simon bit his tongue very hard as he fell, then he briefly became unconscious. But he is responsive, stable and can remember everything.”
