From a football romantic point of view, it is interesting to take a look at Spain these days: there, FC Girona, a club that has had two promotions as its greatest successes, is shaking up the league.
The fact that an underdog is shaking up one of the best leagues in the world is even more rare to admire. The differences in team strength and budget are usually too great; the motto “money scores goals” applies in most cases. In this respect, a look at Spain is more than interesting these days, and not just from a football romantic perspective.
Because outsiders FC Girona continue to cause a sensation in the Spanish championship. The surprise team surprisingly won 4:2 (2:1) at FC Barcelona on Sunday evening and took back the top of the table.
Girona is now two points ahead of record champions Real Madrid, who did not get beyond a 1-1 draw at Betis Sevilla on Saturday. Barca are already seven points behind Girona.

Artem Dovbyk (12th), Miguel (40th), Valery (80th) and Cristhian Stuani (90th + 5) scored the victory for the guests. Goal scorer Robert Lewandowski equalized for the defending champions (19th). In addition, German national team captain Ilkay Gündogan scored in stoppage time (90+2) for the Catalans, who are currently without national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who has a back injury.
Ukrainians with top marks
The upswing of the club, founded in 1930 in the city of 100,000 inhabitants in northeast Catalonia, is astonishing. Because so far the club has been free of its great shine. The greatest successes are the two promotions to the first league in 2017 and 2022 as well as reaching the quarter-finals in the national cup in 2019.

The most important player in coach Miguel Angel Sanchez’s team is striker Artem Dovbyk. The Ukrainian came from SK Dnipro last summer for a fee of 7.5 million euros and immediately became a guarantee of success. 13 scorer points in 15 league games prove this impressively. For comparison: Ex-Bayern star Lewandowski, opponent on Sunday evening, currently only has eleven.

FC Bayern is said to have already kept an eye on right-back Arnau Martinez. Given the current highs in Girona, it is difficult to imagine whether the 20-year-old Spanish international will actually leave the club in the winter.
