A ball from basket to dream of a life different from illiteracy, gender discrimination, HIV infection, early and forced motherhood: the dreams of Marsia Bindo18 years old, thirteen of them under the basket between Chimoio, where she was born, and Maputo, the capital of Mozambiquehis country.
The arrival of Marsia Bindo in San Boniface
Christmas, at the Palasandri of San Bonifacio which is the headquarters of Victoria basketball, they began to celebrate on November 9th, the day in which Marsia entered the gym for the first time: she is, in fact, the first athlete who President Filippo Federico’s company welcomed by joining the social promotion project and sportswoman of the Clarisse Machanguana Foundation (professional Mozambican player) for the benefit of the girls of her country.
A “Christmas present”, in the words of the coach Michela Voltanwhich is actually a sort of extended adoption because Marsyas, remained orphanin San Bonifacio she found a home (the apartment owned by the company which she shares with other away-based Victoria basketball players), a family made up of hundreds of people and, as everyone hopes, the opportunity for a different life, «perhaps with a law degree and professionalism”, she says, imagining for herself the same life script as her compatriot Machanguana.

Marsyas arrived as a tourist, with a view which expires on January 20th, his dreams linked to real and metaphorical baskets and an extraordinary talent because, as Voltan certifies, «from a technical point of view every day is a positive surprise».
Workouts newspapers for her who had left Chimoio a year ago after being seen by some observers from the Clarisse Machanguana Academy and had moved to the capital: a bit like in Maputo where training lasted from 6 in the morning to noon and then there was the school (as a literature student), so six days a week.
The life of Marsyas in San Boniface
Marsia, who goes to Italian school every morning and who can count on the linguistic intermediation of Cely Fernandes, a Brazilian mother of two children who gravitate towards Victoria basketball, explains that she feels completely at ease in a place where, wherever she turns her gaze , you find it written We are a family, that is, we are a family.
It is the motto of Victoria basketwhich governs the varied and very lively Baskin team (the inclusive basketball in which able-bodied males and females of all ages play) and those of competitive sports, from children to the girls of the first team of the C series.
The same spirit that animates so many collateral initiativessuch as raising awareness under the basket on blood and organ donation, against gender violence, for the prevention of female cancers, awareness of autism, endometriosis and so on.
«When they talked to me about Italy it seemed like a dream», she says, «and the only regret is that I wasn’t able to return to Chimoio to tell my uncles that I was leaving to make mine. I am ready to give my best to be able to reward the enormous trust and opportunity given to me.”
Christmas with the familyfor Marsia, that of her coach from Vicenza who professionally moved to San Bonifacio, and New Year’s Eve with the whole society because, Nelson Mandela was certain, «sport has the power to unite people and can create hope where once there was only despair”.
Bureaucracy
Daily training but on the pitch, as a player, who knows when: it’s the flip side of the coin, because in Italy you can register and play if you have completed at least four seasons in the youth team in your country of origin. Otherwise, unless you are extraordinary enough to arouse the interest of top-level leagues, you remain a foreigner.
An employment contract it would open up to a residence permit, but in sport it only applies to Serie A. «Lending a hand to teams in difficulty was our dream», says president Filippo Federico, «Basketball, although important, is the secondary reason. We have had to deal with rules that make it complicated, in Italy, to build bridges of opportunities. But the objective is important: Marsia is only the first and we won’t give up.”
