Matthäus: Tuchel Must Find Solutions as Injuries Pile Up, Sees BVB on Par with Bayern

“Tuchel has to find solutions now. I even see de Ligt in the defensive position in midfield if Upamecano should come back,” wrote the record national player in his column on Sky.

He continued: “Kimmich is suspended, Goretzka broke his hand, Upamecano is injured. If FC Bayern is missing two or three players in the defensive area, you can see that the squad is not as well positioned there as it is in the offensive area.

However, the loss of Kimmich is no more serious for the Bayern legend than a possible loss of Mats Hummels on the Dortmund side. The central defender had to be substituted in BVB’s draw against Eintracht Frankfurt after taking a blow to the calf.

“In big games in which Dortmund play a little more defensively, Hummels has the experience, the eye, the positional play and the strength in tackling,” Matthäus praised the 34-year-old: “It’s a big advantage to have him in the team.”

Before the duel, Matthäus sees BVB on an equal footing with Bayern anyway.

“When I look at the last six or seven months, BVB has scored more points than Bayern and is still unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season,” argued the 62-year-old – also because BVB came back from behind twice against Frankfurt and did a “huge job” in the Champions League against Newcastle.

“The team believes in itself and has gained self-confidence over the last few games. At the beginning of the season they got lucky victories, but now they play compactly and refreshingly,” Matthäus explained: “I see them at eye level with Bayern at home.”
