Runaways caught again

Shortly after Kim Heiduk and Julius Johansen catch up to the front, the escape is over again. The peloton swallows the breakaways.

Of course Evenepoel

Almost as expected, Remco Evenepoel attacks. The Belgian champion is aiming for points to secure his mountain jersey. The time trial world champion wants to be there at least in the first two mountain classifications. Thomas De Gendt and Casper Pedersen join him in the group.

Hell speed

As usual, the pace is brisk right from the start. This is so high that attempts to break away are initially doomed to failure.

Sharp start

Now the 17th stage is released. The wild hunt for Angliru can begin. But first we will certainly devote ourselves to finding the group of the day.

Other ratings

Juan Ayuso is the best of the rest of the field in fourth place, about two and a half minutes behind. This means that the Catalan is in the lead in the junior ranking with a good three minutes lead over Cian Uijtdebroeks. The padding from Remco Evenepoel is lush when it comes to mountain jerseys. Exactly 30 points speak for the Belgian, although a maximum of 35 is possible today. On the other hand, the Green Kaden Groves doesn’t have to worry about his sprinter’s jersey given his 93 points credit; for this rating today he has at best 40 points on the road. In the team ranking, Jumbo-Visma leads by more than eleven minutes. And the golden starting number of yesterday’s most active driver is today worn by Joel Nicolau Beltrán.

It’s rolling

The field of the remaining 150 professional cyclists has just started moving. In a neutralized journey we go through Ribadesella on the north coast of Asturias, which is also called the “dinosaur coast” due to numerous bone finds. Located on the Cantabrian Sea, the old fishing port expresses the maritime character of the town.

13:36

Red jersey

The air is getting thinner and thinner for Sepp Kuss. The lead jersey he got on the 8th stage is gradually becoming too heavy for the American. After yesterday’s attack and the stage win of his teammate Jonas Vingegaard, the gap has shrunk to 29 seconds. That could be too little to be able to assert yourself at the top again. Jumbo-Visma is spoiled for choice anyway, as third-placed Primož Roglič is another driver on course for the podium.

Stage profile

The professional cyclists will begin their day’s work and their journey through Asturias almost at sea level. At the beginning it’s quite relaxed from a topographical point of view. The road gradually rises. After almost 50 kilometers, things become more pronounced before things really get down to business on the second part. When climbing through the Cantabrian Mountains, two peaks in the first category await you. The tough end comes with the grueling climb to Angliru at 1,558 meters. This mountain of the Category Especial is extremely steep in the last six or seven kilometers – at 24 percent in some places.
