Coros has expanded its range of budget GPS running watches with the launch of the PACE 3, the successor to the popular PACE 2, released way back in 2020. The PACE 2 is still considered one of the best budget options on the market, but the PACE 3 brings significant internal improvements.
The exterior design of the watch has remained largely unchanged, maintaining its ultra-lightweight feel with a weight of just 30 grams. However, it now features a touchscreen, improved GPS, a new processor, an updated optical heart rate sensor, and an extended battery life. It also offers 4GB of storage space for music.
On the specs front, this represents a notable upgrade over its predecessor, albeit with a slight increase in price over the previous generation.
The PACE 3 is the newest entry in the GPS watch range from Coros and is primarily dedicated to running and sports performance. While the PACE 2 already had a wide range of features, the PACE 3 is mainly focused on updating the hardware.
The new watch has a similar case to the PACE 2, with a width of 42mm and a single wheel and button on the side. Even though the hardware has been revamped, the Coros has kept its one-button, one-wheel design rather than using the larger two-button, one-wheel interface of its outdoor-oriented GPS watches.
The PACE 3 band is slightly wider than the PACE 2, going from 20mm to 22mm. Despite the hardware revamp, the PACE 3 remains one of the lightest GPS watches on the market, weighing just 30 grams with a nylon strap and 38 grams with a silicone strap.
The 30mm screen with a resolution of 240 x 240 pixels remains unchanged, but is now touchscreen. The watch is also water resistant to 50 meters.
Initially, the PACE 3 is available in four different color versions, with a fifth version called the PACE 3 Track available for pre-order, featuring a red case and a red and white striped band inspired by a running track.
Coros has improved several sensors in the PACE 3, including a new optical heart rate sensor with blood oxygenation (SpO2), a dual frequency multi GNSS chip, a barometric altimeter, a compass and a thermometer. The optical heart rate sensor does not include electrodes for measuring heart rate variability like some other Coros GPS watches.
The PACE 3 also features Wi-Fi connectivity, in addition to Bluetooth. In addition, battery life has been improved, with an autonomy of 38 hours with GPS alone, 25 hours in multi GNSS mode and 15 hours in dual frequency mode.
The watch offers many tracking and analysis features through the Coros app and the Coros training center website, including VO2max, wrist power, running dynamics, complex workout planning, athletics and training load.
The PACE 3 is able to follow routes, display elevation profiles and provide route guidance. It also features an MP3 music player and 4GB of memory.
The price of the PACE 3 has increased slightly from its predecessor to €249, but remains affordable considering the new features and improved hardware. The PACE 3 is available from August 29, 2023, except for the Track version which will be available in September.
