Injuries in the NFL are the biggest obstacle to winning a Super Bowl. Their random nature makes any player a possible victim of one, which is why they are always a concern for any fan of this sport. After confirming the severity of QB Aaron Rodgers’ injury, we can argue that the New York Jets are very far from meeting their expectations of winning the Super Bowl this season.
Although it is still very early in the year, history is not kind in similar cases, and in this article we review 10 of the injuries that ruined seasons that were aiming for the highest.
10 injuries that ruined Super Bowl seasons
1.QB Aaron Rodgers – Jets (2023)
In 2022, the Jets had terrible play from their QBs, between Joe Flacco, Zach Wilson, Mike White and Chris Streveler (together they had a QB rating of 75). The Jets defense was Top 5 and that is why they decided to make a change for Aaron Rogers, who was reunited with his former offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
In just 4 plays, Aaron Rodgers suffered an Achilles tendon injury and will be out for the season.
How did the year end?
We don’t know yet, but they went from being a Super Bowl contending team to just being competitive… like in 2022

2. QB Tom Brady – Patriots (2008)
In 2007, the Patriots fell short of being the second undefeated champion in the NFL. They had the best offense in NFL history. In 2008 they were favorites to reach the Super Bowl and win it. Brady left injured (ACL) in week 1 and missed the rest of the season.
How did the year end?
11-5, out of the Playoffs. Matt Cassel was relatively successful, but it wasn’t the same.
QB Peyton Manning – Colts (2011)
With Peyton Manning, the Colts were always a Playoff team and had a Top 5 offense in the NFL. In 2010 they were fourth in points and yards per game.
Manning suffered neck injury against Washington and had to undergo not one, but two operations on his neck. It looked like his NFL career was coming to an end. He did not play in the 2011 season.
How did the year end?
2-14, the Colts were the worst team in the NFL (with Curtis Painter, Dan Orlovsky and Kerry Collins) and had the first pick in the 2012 draft.
4. QB Andrew Luck – Colts (2019)
One of the best talents in the NFL at the QB position, Andrew Luck had several injuries in his career, but in 2019 there were high expectations because he was very successful in the first year under Frank Reich’s offense (4,593 yards, 39 TD and reached the Divisional Round).
Luck suffered an ankle injury in minicamp, causing him to unexpectedly retire from the NFL after multiple injuries throughout his career.
How did the year end?
7-9, out of the Playoffs. Jacoby Brissett and Bryan Hoyer couldn’t do more with the good team the Colts had.
On this day in 2019: #Colts Andrew Luck shockingly retired from the NFL at age 29.
Luck cited recurrent cycle of injuries as the primary reason.
As he walked off the field for the last time, Colts fans booed him.

5. QB Dak Prescott – Cowboys (2020)
In 2019 Dallas was a great poorly coached team, with talent in all positions and with a Dak Prescott who threw almost five thousand yards and 30 TD passes and received the franchise tag. Mike McCarty had high hopes in his first year with the team.
Prescott broke his ankle in Week 5 and missed the rest of the season
How did the year end?
6-10, out of the Playoffs. With Prescott, the Dallas offense averaged 32.6 points per game, without him (with Dalton, DiNucci, Gilbert) – 21.1 points.
6. CB Darrelle Revis – Jets (2012)
With Revis and HC Rex Ryan, the Jets had a spectacular defense that led them to two consecutive conference finals, shutting out Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. In 2012 there were big dreams (including the arrival of Tim Tebow) and Revis was a fundamental piece to the Jets’ success.
Revis suffered a knee injury (ACL) in the third game of the season and was lost all year
How did the year end?
6-10 out of playoffs and NY would trade Revis the following year to the Buccaneers.
7. LB Ray Lewis – Ravens (2002)
Ray Lewis was the heart of one of the most dominant defenses in the league. Baltimore was always a contender with him and this team had high hopes in 2002, including the arrival of a rookie safety named Ed Reed.
Lewis suffered a shoulder injury in the fourth game of the season. He attempted to return in Week 10, but it was ineffective and his season ended (ACL) in the third game of the season.
How did the year end?
7-9 outside of Playoffs (2-2 with Lewis). The defense went from number two to 22nd in the NFL.
8. Jim McMahon – QB – Bears – 1986
The Bears had just won the Super Bowl with one of the best defenses in NFL history. They had Walter Payton, a stable QB like Jim McMahon and in general a team that could think of being a dynasty.
In one of the dirtiest hits in NFL history (the culprit is named Charles Martin), McMahon suffered a shoulder injury and probably also in the head in week 12. He missed the rest of the season
How did the year end?
14-2 (6-0 with McMahon), eliminated at home in the divisional round in a game with four turnovers.
9. QB Randall Cunningham – Eagles (1991)
Philadelphia’s dreams in 1991 were enormous. A team full of talent and a QB like Randall Cunningham, who had been the MVP the previous season. Philadelphia had a scary defense with Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, Eric Allen and Seth Joyner
In the first game of the season against the Packers, in the first quarter, Cunningham suffered a knee injury that would make him miss the entire season
How did the year end?
10-6 without playoffs, despite having a Top 5 defense, Philadelphia’s offense went from third best to 25th. There was a QB carousel between Jim McMahon, Jeff Kemp and Brad Goebel.
10. QB Carson Palmer – Bengals/Cardinals
Few players as unlucky as Palmer, in the 2005 season that seemed magical for the Bengals, Palmer suffered an injury on the second play of the Playoff game against Steelersafter completing a 66-yard pass.
Almost 10 years later, in 2014 with the Cardinals, he plays 6 games, has a 6-0 record and suffers a knee injury (ACL) in week 10, which ends his season. Arizona lost 5 of its last seven games, including the Wildcard round with Ryan Lindley at QB.
