He’s done it again: tennis prodigy Carlos Alcaraz broke a US Open record before the tournament even started.
Because the 20-year-old defending champion starts as the youngest number one seeded player of all time in the last Grand Slam 2023. Alcaraz exceeds Ashley Cooper’s previous record from 1957 by 234 days.
At the age of 19 years, four months and six days, the Spanish shooting star had already become the youngest number one in the men’s world rankings.
In Flushing Meadows, Alcaraz is not only aiming to defend the singles title, but also his second Grand Slam success of the year after winning an epic five-set final thriller against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.
Both recently met again in the final of the Cincinnati Open, this time Djokovic won 5: 7, 7: 6 (9: 7), 7: 6 (7: 4) after three extremely exciting and competitive sets after 3:49 hours.
The Serb, who goes into the US Open as number two, said afterwards: “It was one of the most exciting matches I’ve ever played at any tournament. It felt like a Grand Slam.”
From a German perspective, the greatest hopes are once again resting on Alexander Zverev, whose form curve has been rising steeply in recent weeks. The man from Hamburg starts the race as number 12 on the seeding list.
