The Challenges and Successes of Badminton Couple Alexandra Bøje and Mathias Christiansen

“We are a bit challenged with our communication on the pitch because we are very honest.”

This is what badminton player Alexandra Bøje, who has now been dating her mixed doubles partner Mathias Christiansen for three years, told BT

Life, where the professional and the private are mixed together, still has its challenges.

“It can become very personal when we know each other as well as we do,” she says.

They train together, they live together – well, on the whole, there is not much in everyday life where the mixed doubles pair, ranked number 11 in the world, are apart.

Because even when they have time off – the shuttlecocks still sneak within the walls of the home.

“It often all flows into one,” says partner and boyfriend Mathias Christiansen, and says that he often puts the sport on when it is shown on television.

Still, there are no rules about how much the sport can and must fill.

“But at times we try not to turn on the TV or check too many results in our category,” he says.

In recent months, the two have also appeared on the big stage.

In June, Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje made it all the way to the top in the Super 500 tournament Singapore Open.

“It’s extra cool when we succeed in things because we can do it together. It gives it an extra sense of euphoria,’ says 29-year-old Mathias Christiansen.

Now they stand ahead of their third WC together, but for the first time it will be on Danish soil when the tournament kicks off on Monday in the Royal Arena.

“It’s probably only once in our career that we get to experience a WC on home ground, so we’re really looking forward to it and hope we can handle the home ground to our advantage,” says Alexandra Bøje.

The two have no doubt at all that the dream is also a piece of metal for Denmark on Danish soil. But behind the big dreams hides a well-known realism.

“We cannot allow ourselves to think further ahead than the one match with the draw we have been given.”

“We’ve played tournaments before where we’ve won it all, and we know that if everything goes wrong for us, we can be far ahead, and we naturally hope for that,” concludes Mathias Christiansen.
