Tennis Player Jule Niemeier Looks to German Soccer Players as Role Models in Boosting Popularity of Women’s Tennis

Tennis player Jule Niemeier sees German soccer players as a role model in the fight for more popularity for her sport. “The women played an unbelievable EM and then of course drew attention to themselves,” said Niemeier at the WTA tournament in Hamburg. At the World Cup in Australia, more than five million viewers watched the German opening game against Morocco (6-0) on Monday morning on ZDF.

For the 23-year-old from Dortmund, the women’s European Championship finals last summer were “a bit” comparable to her and Tatjana Maria’s run in Wimbledon. Last year, Niemeier stormed into the quarter-finals at the All England Club – and failed there because of Maria. The victories caused a stir.

“If there are more results and successes, I believe that we can manage to get the matches shown more on television,” said Niemeier, who played against Australian Daria in the round of eight in Hamburg on Thursday Saville had lost.

The last German Grand Slam winner so far is Angelique Kerber, who won the Australian Open and the US Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2018. “Angie has of course already managed to restore the boom in Germany a bit through her Grand Slam victories. But one person will not be able to do it. We players can only do that together,” said Niemeier.
