Mercedes ahead in first Miami practice session

Mercedes has reported back for the start of practice for the Miami Grand Prix. Shortly before the end of Friday’s race, George Russell took first place and relegated team-mate Lewis Hamilton to second place. The seven-time world champion was 0.212s slower than Russell.

Third was Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari, followed only in fourth place by the world championship leader and last year’s Miami winner Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. However, the 25-year-old Dutchman did not try the faster soft tires either. Teammate Sergio Perez, who was victorious in Baku, did not get past eleventh place in the second Red Bull. The 33-year-old Mexican is six points behind Verstappen in the World Championship standings.
