National Hockey League (NHL) Edmonton Oilers captain and all-league star Connor McDavid shared his thoughts on his future place in hockey history in an interview with the NHL press service.

“At the end of the day, I want my name to be remembered in the hockey history books and to be up there with the greatest of all time,” McDavid revealed. “You know, with guys like Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr and others that I missed. Of course, that’s what I want.”

McDavid emphasizes that for this to happen, there must also be team success. According to him, impressive numbers in the statistics columns do not make a hockey player one of the greatest. “I think the biggest compliment in this game is to be known as a winner, right?” continued the Canadian. “You look at Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, [Veinu] Gretzky.. all these guys are winners.”

It should be noted that during his career, Gretzky helped the Oilers win the Stanley Cup four times, Crosby did it three times with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Teves won three championships with the Chicago Blackhawks.

“You’ve got to be a winner to be with the best of the best,” opined McDavid, “And at the end of the day, like I said, I want to be there. To us [kā komandai] have all the tools — it’s just up to us.”

At the moment, the best achievement of the Edmonton club together with McDavid is reaching the finals of the Western Conference in the 2021/22 season, when the “Oilers” recognized the superiority of the future Stanley Cup champions Colorado “Avalanche” in four games.

This season, the 27-year-old Canadian became the first player in 27 years to score more than 140 points in an NHL season. Currently, McDavids has scored 148 (62+86) points in 79 games and is the undisputed leader of the entire league in goals scored and points.
