• Another Northern European, Holgers Rune (ATP 10th), defeated Australian Open surprise author Ben Shelton (ATP 41st) in a three-set duel – 6:7 (7), 6:4, 6:2.
• Fifth-ranked Taylor Fritz defeated his compatriot John Isner (ATP 38) in three sets – 3:6, 6:3, 6:4.
• Fritz used two of three opportunities to break the prolific Isner’s serve.
• Both participants in the match won more than 80% of the games on their serves.
• Isner has nine uncatchable serves, while Fritz has four.
• 41-year-old Spaniard Feliciano Lopez (ATP 1035), who qualified for the main tournament with wildcard help, defeated American Christopher Eubanks (ATP 105th), who is 15 years younger than him, in two sets – 7:6 (3), 6:4.
