Two-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud makes his debut at the 30th Terra Wortmann Open

The fourth in the world rankings from Norway is preparing for the Grand Slam event in Wimbledon in HalleWestfalen.

Halle Westphalia. Casper Ruud will make his debut at the Terra Wortmann Open next year. The 23-year-old Norwegian will serve for the first time in HalleWestfalen from June 17th to 25th, 2023 at the anniversary edition of Germany’s most important tennis tournament. Ruud, currently number four in the world rankings, is the fourth top ten professional after Daniil Medvedev (ATP 3), Alexander Zverev (ATP 6) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 8) to announce his coming for the 30th anniversary of the tournament . Tournament director Ralf Weber is enthusiastic about the field of participants: “With Casper Ruud we were able to win the next top star for the Terra Wortmann Open early on. He’s one of the best players of the year and has great potential to win numerous titles, and not just on clay.”

In 2022, Ruud looks back on the best career season so far. The Norwegian won the tournaments in Buenos Aires, Geneva and Gstaad and reached the finals of the Grand Slam events in Paris (loss to Nadal) and New York (loss to Alcaraz). As a result, he climbed to second place in the world rankings for the first time in September. It was career titles seven, eight and nine for the clay court specialist from Oslo, who is already the best tennis player of all time in his home country. Ruud’s track record on grass, on the other hand, has been modest so far, in Wimbledon he reached the second round for the first time this year. “Playing on grass is an exciting challenge. It entails some completely different aspects and you have to think of several things. But in the end the lines are the same and the net is the same height,” the right-hander explained of his relationship with the green after jokingly claiming at the Miami tournament that “grass is for golfers”.

However, HalleWestfalen is not an unknown place for Ruud. Father Christian – son Casper’s coach – not only took part in the 2000 ATP event in Lindenstadt, but also played for TC Blau-Weiss Halle in the tennis Bundesliga for many years: “I have good contact with Christian, so I’m happy I am particularly pleased to be able to welcome him and Casper here next year,” says Ralf Weber. Ruud had already registered for the tournament in 2021, but had to cancel at short notice due to an injury. “I’m always happy to play where my father played. That’s something special for me,” says Casper, who also emphasizes: “I’m number four in the world, of course I want to play a role in awarding the title.”

The competition will not make it easy for Ruud in the race for the coveted lawn title. Despite the end of the career of record tournament winner Roger Federer, the field of participants in 2023 in HalleWestfalen is peppered with absolute world-class professionals. In addition to the top ten stars Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, lawn specialists Nick Kyrgios (Australia/ATP 22) and Jannik Sinner (Italy/ATP 12) are also involved. “I absolutely believe that each of these players is capable of the title. But the past has shown that predictions are difficult. In any case, we offer absolute world class on the courts,” says tournament manager Weber. “So it’s definitely worth a visit!”
