Ancelotti: “We have to change our attitude”
Jürgen Klopp and his Premier League team wet the record German champions in front of 57,500 spectators in the Allianz Arena. In the final of the top-class Audi Cup, Liverpool meets Atlético Madrid on Wednesday evening (8:30 p.m.).
The top Spanish club defeated SSC Napoli 2-1 (0-0) in the first semi-final on Tuesday after two late goals. On Wednesday afternoon (5.45 p.m.) in their own stadium, Bayern have only the game for third place as a dress rehearsal for the national showdown in the Supercup against DFB Cup winners Borussia Dortmund.
“0:3 rarely feels good. It was anything but ideal. We didn’t manage to appear compact as a unit. Liverpool fooled us. The sting is deep. We have to show a reaction,” said world champion Thomas Müller on ARD and CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: “Liverpool had one or two more courses than we did. There was more liveliness, more speed. We played five games, lost four. We have to turn the corner quickly.”
Liverpool’s Emre Can, on the other hand, made the game “very fun” and his team-mate Joel Matip emphasized: “We don’t want to overstate it, but you like to win against Bayern.” Despite the clear victory, head coach Klopp was cautious. “I’m not dissatisfied, but we still have a lot to do. We have to be even more dominant,” said Klopp.

Attackers Sadio Mané (7th minute) and Mohamed Salah (34th) as well as substitute top striker Daniel Sturridge (83rd) made Klopp celebrate their goals on the sidelines. His team, who acted much faster than their opponents, showed a high level of football. The lightning-fast switching game of Klopp’s character overwhelmed Bayern, the goals came after great counterattacks by Liverpool.
The first Bayern test after the trip to Asia with three defeats in four games was sobering. Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s team acted without any recognizable structure. New signing James Rodríguez largely lacked the bond. However, his ability flashed with a 20-metre shot (59th). Shortly thereafter, the Colombian apparently left the pitch with muscular problems. Record purchase Corentin Tolisso was unlucky in midfield and lost the ball before the 0:1. In addition, Thiago had to leave the field early.
Sven Ulreich, who replaced the not yet fit Manuel Neuer in goal, was able to parry a free kick from Alberto Moreno brilliantly. Otherwise it would have been 0:3 at the break. The Bayern offensive, which featured a top-class team of Lewandowski, Müller, Ribéry and James, didn’t have any chances to score until the break. In the second half, Bayern made an effort, but lacked ideas and physical assertiveness against the robustly defending “Reds”.
Atlético Madrid turned the game against Napoli with two late goals from striker Fernando Torres (72′) and Luciano Vietto (81′). The Italians took the lead with a great volley from José Callejón (56′). Atlético partially exaggerated the effort. Defender Diego Godín saw the yellow-red card shortly before the final whistle for repeated foul play. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved a penalty kick from Naples striker Arkadiusz Milik (34′).
