FIBA proposes to adjust its calendar to allow EuroLeague players to come during the November international window. But will the EuroLeague follow FIBA?
Will the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the EuroLeague manage to find common ground, little by little?
With a new boss, Dejan Bodiroga, the ECA (Euroleague Commercial Assets) is more open to discussion than it was during the reign of Jordi Bertomeu. When the former Serbian player took office, the president of the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) Jean-Pierre Siutat was, for example, appeared enchanted.
FIBA takes a step towards the EuroLeague; will the EuroLeague do the same?
The first sign of an opening could come from the release of EuroLeague players during the November international window, according to our information. While many national teams will play very important matches to qualify for the 2023 World Cup, they are examining the possibility of bringing in their elements playing in the EuroLeague. Thus, several national federations have started discussions with Euroleague clubs with the aim of shifting their matches and having potential internationals. To support them, FIBA sent a letter to the national federations to postpone the international meetings from Thursday November 10 to Friday November 11 and those from Sunday November 13 to Monday November 14. This adjustment to the calendar allows the EuroLeague to be able to advance certain matches of the seventh day (scheduled for November 10 and 11) of the regular season earlier in the week, insofar as the matches of the sixth day are scheduled for Thursday 3 and Friday 4 November.
It remains to be seen whether the Barcelona institution will take a step towards FIBA by choosing to organize a championship day.
