Everything seems to indicate that the Golden State Warriors will have to make important decisions in terms of salary during the next year, since there are several players who will end their current contracts and seek increases.
One of the contracts that could become a headache for the team is that of Draymond Green, who intends to get a maximum four-year contract extension and everything seems to indicate that the Warriors leadership is not willing to do so, which questions whether it is a good decision or not.
First take into account the fact that Green is not only one of the best defensive players on the team, but also one of the top playmakers the organization has. Last season he showed it by being the team’s leading assister with 7 assists per game and leading the Warriors in defensive rating with 103.
If you talk about offensive contribution as such, once again Green proves to be far from being a player who can score consistently or support the team’s efforts in terms of efficiency. He finished the season averaging 7.5 points, posting an efficiency of 29% on 3-pointers and 65% on free throws.
To detail is that his impact on the game was reduced with the emergence of other figures, since in advanced statistics it was shown that players like Andrew Wiggins, Stephen Curry and Kevon Looney ended up giving the team more victories based on their defensive performance, something in which he had been leading for several years.
Something very important to keep in mind when thinking about his renewal is his regularity and that is that beyond what he provides on the field, he remained active in about 70% of the organization’s matches in the last three years. In particular, last season he suffered physical problems that only allowed him to play 46 of the 82 regular season games.
His value in the team is quite high and he is one of the pieces that has been fundamental in the dynasty that has won four championships in the Warriors, but at least today it seems illogical to give him a contract close to 160 million dollars and even more so when figures on the rise like Jordan Poole or Andrew Wiggins are looking for the same thing, but with much more to deliver in the future.
Only time will tell what decision the Warriors’ front office ends up making, but it’s clear that under current salary-cap and luxury-tax rules, a deal this high for Draymond Green could end up being a mistake.
