The Cleveland Cavaliers will add former Sacramento Kings coach Luke Walton as an assistant coach to JB Bickerstaff, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.
Walton spent more than five years coaching the Lakers and Kings but was fired from Sacramento after just 17 games in the 2021-2022 season. His record as a head coach is 166-241 and he failed to lead any of his teams to the playoffs.
As an assistant he had an outstanding step in the Golden State Warriors, where together with Steve Kerr he managed to win the championship in 2015.
The Kings named Walton Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown as their new coach in early May, replacing interim Alvin Gentry.
The Cavaliers finished with a 44-38 record, to rank eighth in the Eastern Conference. The team qualified for the play-in tournament but lost both games to the Brooklyn Nets and the Atlanta Hawks.
Cleveland has a promising base where players like Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Collin Sexton stand out.
