Belinda Bencic is in great shape at the French Open, but still has to give up in the third round. The disillusionment with the Swiss is great.

After two easy victories at the start, Belinda Bencic encountered significantly more resistance in her third game at the French Open. Leylah Fernandez, currently world number 18, demands everything from the Swiss, who is four places higher, in a high-quality game. Bencic doesn’t seem to be deterred by this and hits back impressively after just losing the starting set.

She gets the second set 6: 3 and also makes it 2: 0 in the decisive third round with the break. Then Bencic gambled away a 40-0 on his own serve and failed to pull away. Fernandez knows how to take advantage of this immediately, grabs the rebreak and a little later the win. After almost three hours, the Canadian turned her first set ball into a 7: 5, 3: 6 and 7: 5 success.

Didn’t grab your own chances

“I’m very disappointed. It’s very bitter, »says Bencic after the game in the SRF interview, somewhat dejected. “We both played very well, it was a top-class game. My opponent played great, congratulations.”

Nevertheless, Bencic mourns her missed chances and is hard on herself: “I couldn’t grab my chances. Another Grand Slam I didn’t tear much at. I’m sure I’ll need my time.” In search of the reasons for the narrow defeat, the Swiss is close to tears. “It’s just doing because it’s a Grand Slam again. Sometimes you wonder if you’re good enough.”

Milestone for Teichmann

Jil Teichmann’s emotional world is completely different. After a long fight of more than three hours, the 24-year-old defeated Victoria Azarenka 4: 6, 7: 5 and 7: 6 and made it into the round of the last 16 in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. On the way to her career milestone, the 24-year-old from Seeland not only showed strong nerves, but also excellent stamina and a great deal of fighting spirit.

“We both played tactically very intelligently. We knew exactly what the other was doing. Nevertheless, it was complicated to find a solution, »says Teichmann and adds: «I am very satisfied that I accepted the fight, accepted it and finally won it.»

In the round of 16, Sloane Stephens, the 2017 US Open winner, is waiting. “She plays well on sand. In general, the Grand Slams often play well. It will definitely be a difficult match », Teichmann knows what to expect. But she definitely believes in her chance: “I don’t know who the favorite is. But we’re both in a good moment, we’ve won our three matches. That also means something.”
