Mannheim. When the Bundesliga baseball players of the Mannheim Tornados start the new season against Mainz on Saturday, sports director Ulli Wermuth is particularly looking forward to one of his newcomers: Marcel Giraud. “With him we have one of the best German left-handed throwers in our ranks,” says Wermuth in an interview with this editorial team. With Igor Januario they have also committed an excellent pitcher. “We have a good team in pitching and defense,” says the sporting director, who finds that the tornadoes have intensified compared to last season.

It was also an advantage this year that the squad was complete before the start of the round and the team could prepare together. In recent years, new players have always joined the team during the season.
Don’t underestimate competition
While president Peter Engelhardt and trainer Alexander Szalay didn’t want to use the word “play-offs” that much (we reported), that’s the clear goal of the season for Ulli Wermuth. But he also knows that the competition has not slept before the new season, but has strengthened itself and should therefore not be underestimated. In the end you have to see where the team is when they get together well, said the sporting director.

The Tornados will play their first games this Saturday and Sunday at the Mainz Athletics. The home premiere at the Roberto Clemente Field takes place a week later against Stuttgart.
