Three years later, the Superior Basketball League returns

Three years after its last edition, the Superior Basketball League in Cuba will finally return. On April 1, the country’s main courts will host the eight classified teams: Villa Clara and Artemisa, champion and subtitler respectively, in addition to Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Ciego de Ávila, Sancti Spíritus, Matanzas and Capitalinos, according to reports. Rebel Radio.

Weeks ago the exact date for the start of the elite contest of the cuban basketball, considered among the most popular, only surpassed by baseball. On this aspect, the national commissioner, Dalia Henry, told the aforementioned media outlet: “As is known, the date previously scheduled was for March 2 and this was not possible. Now it will be from April 1 to June 12 and we intend to achieve a better preparation of the provinces”.

However, the venue where the Artemisa team will play in this Superior League is still unknown, although there is the possibility that the Westerners will hold their home games in Pinar del Río or Havana. The same happens with the Giraldo Córdova Cardín room, home of the Buffaloes of Ciego de Ávila.

“The maintenance work on the Ciego de Ávila multipurpose facility has not yet been completed and we will see when it can be ready. We are also concerned about the issue of the Rafael Castiello in Guantánamo, which is one of the important venues for Cuban basketball,” Henry told the aforementioned outlet.

Another handicap for the Superior League lies in the schedules of the matches, something that does not help much influx to the game rooms, since they will compete at 3:00 PM in the case of women, and 5:00 PM for men and would only be carried out at night if there is energy availability.

The LSB suffered a serious setback in 2020 and 2021 when it could not take place. In the first, the authorities argued that the decision responded “to the temporary effects on fuel that our country is facing, resulting from the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States.”

The prolonged impasse caused a significant competitive pothole that paralyzed the development of many players and cooled fans. The main Cuban basketball tournament – which is already conditioned by various obstacles – has yet to try to make up for lost time, something that costs a lot.
