Foreign footballfellow sufferers. Christian Eriksen (29) has encouraged a 9-year-old girl who has to undergo heart surgery via a video message. “I’m sure you’ll get back to normal life soon, just like me.”
It has been almost two months since Eriksen himself fell victim to a cardiac arrest during the European Championship match between Denmark and Finland. The midfielder was resuscitated on the field and then taken to hospital. A few days later, he was implanted with a defibrillator.
Eriksen recently received a poignant letter from the family of 9-year-old Evie, a young fan of Tottenham (Eriksen’s ex-club) who also needs a defibrillator after a heart attack. They asked Eriksen to encourage Evie, and he did so via a video message.
“Thank you for the great letter,” Eriksen says. “I hope you feel comfortable and that you are moving towards the operation with confidence. It’s not fun being in a hospital, but the doctors know what they’re doing. They will help you. I am sure you will return to normal life very soon, like me. You will succeed. I want to wish you the best of luck and hopefully we’ll see each other in the future.” Normally Evie’s surgery took place yesterday, but it’s been postponed. “Because the surgeon was involved in a car accident,” her parents said on Facebook.
Eriksen has been back in Milan with his club Inter since last week. He follows a rehabilitation program there, which is monitored by Danish doctors. The midfielder feels good both mentally and physically. However, it is not yet clear where his future lies. In principle, playing football with a defibrillator is prohibited in Serie A.
