Olympic Games 2021: 32 Ivorian athletes competing in Tokyo

Thirty-two Ivorian athletes are expected from July 22 to August 8, 2021 in Tokyo, in the Japanese capital, where they will take part in the 32nd edition of the Olympic Games (JO).

They are the sprinters Murielle Ahouré (reigning world champion in the 60m indoor) and Marie-Josée Ta Lou, the reigning world vice-champion in the 100m and 200m, also the flag bearer of the Ivorian team in Tokyo.

In the men’s sprint event, the Ivorian team highlights the young prodigy Arthur Gué Cissé, current holder of the Ivory Coast record for the 100 meters with his time of 9.93 seconds. This record had been held since 2016 by Ben Youssef Méïté.

In Taekwondo, the Olympic champion of -80kg, Cheick Sallah Junior Cissé, the only gold medalist in the history of Côte d’Ivoire will put his title at stake in the Japanese capital where his fellow student and compatriot Ruth Gbagbi (champion in the reigning world of -67 kg) will try to do better after his bronze medal gleaned at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The Taekwondo’ins Elephants also line up Seydou Gbané and Aminata Traoré.

Judo will be the business of Zouleiha Abzetta Dabonné, a subscriber to the Olympics since she was already present at Rio 2016.

The strongest of the Ivorian contingent in contention for Tokyo 2020 is composed of the Espoir (U23) football team with renowned names such as Eric Bailly (Manchester United, England), Franck Kessié (AC Milan, Italy), Max Gradel (Sivasspor , Turkey), and Timité Cheick (Amiens, France) as well as nationals Ira Tape Eliezer from FC San Pedro and Nagoli Oupoh Maxime from Sol FC.

Manchester United’s young Amad Diallo, the revelation of the year and new darling of Ivorian fans, is also on this list of 22 players.

It is therefore 22 Elephants Hopes who will try to trump very hard in the land of the rising sun, in a D pool, perceived as that of death by the most experienced observers of the round ball. Besides the Ivory Coast, this hen is made up of Brazil, Germany and Saudi Arabia.

Initially scheduled from July 24 to August 9, 2020, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics must finally be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nearly 11,090 athletes are competing for the Tokyo Olympics across 33 sports and 339 medal-winning events.
