The estimate made a lot of noise about ten years ago. It revealed the dark side of the shift of athletes in a life of multimillionaires for which their career had not prepared them. Half of the former NBA players were reportedly bankrupt or in serious financial difficulty within five years of stopping their careers. This estimate rose to 60% according to Sport Illustrated, in 2009, knowing that the NBA pays pensions, but not before the age of 45 (see box). A percentage that “Has never been substantiated by a reliable source”, responds the NBA when asked today.
