Kate Middleton surprised Wimbledon fans with a moving tribute after the 2020 tournament was suspended due to Coronavirus. The Duchess of Cambridge recorded a special video to celebrate what would have been the opening day of the two-week tennis tournament, Wimbledon 2020. Tennis fan Kate, who has participated in the tournament almost every year since she became a director, provided a moving voice for the movie, which was shared on Wimbledon’s official Twitter account, paying tribute to fans and remembering that the Championship will make a triumphant return “when the time comes”.

The Duchess says: “350 days, 14 hours and 12 minutes between the last shot of the ball and the moment when it was to be the next. Over the years your support has shaped this historical event. It does not matter the time of day or the names on the board, you’ve always been there, come rain or shine. This year, unfortunately, although things are very different, but we’ll spend our time until we sit on the edge of our seats again and celebrate so when the time is right and we open the doors, we will come back again and it will be worth the wait. “

Middleton became patron of The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (AELTC) in 2016, taking over from the Queen, who had held the role for 64 years. The mom of the three was photographed at the Championships in the years before she became a member of the royal family and even wrote a letter to officials in 2008, thanking them for a “wonderfully relaxed day”.

The Duchess saw Andy Murray win the men’s final in 2013 and 2016 and last year surprised the crowd on field 14 as he watched British Harriet Dart challenge American Christina McHale. Kate and her sister-in-law, Meghan Markle enjoyed the first day of girls in Wimbledon in 2018 and again last year, with the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, Pippa Middleton, and on both occasions they saw Meghan’s best friend, Serena Williams, from the Royal Box in the Center Court.
