France mourns the loss of former football manager Michel Hidalgo. As the French association announced on Thursday, the 1984 European Champion coach died at the age of 87 after a long illness. Hidalgo had his best time in his eight years as coach of Les Bleus from 1976. With the selection around Michel Platini, he won the title at the 1984 European Championships and thus the first great triumph for France. “His vision and work still resonate with every game played by our national team,” wrote Platini. Two years earlier, he was eliminated with the Equipe Tricole in the World Cup semi-final against Germany on penalties. In his active career, Hidalgo played for AC Le Havre, Stade Reims and AS Monaco.
