Juancho Hernangómez commits to Panathinaikos through 2027
Juancho Hernangómez has signed a four-year contract extension worth 10 million euros in total to remain with Panathinaikos through the 2027 season. The Spanish forward confirmed his decision in an interview with EuroHoops, noting that strong support from his mother and the club’s fan base influenced his choice to reject outside interest from other European sides.
The agreement locks in the veteran forward following a turbulent campaign for the Greek powerhouse. Panathinaikos secured the domestic cup last season but stumbled in the domestic league finals against archrivals Olympiacos and missed the EuroLeague Final Four. Valencia Basket eliminated the Greens in the quarterfinals with a historic 3-2 series comeback after trailing 2-0.
Roster overhaul and contract terms in Athens
Despite boasting a loaded roster that included Kendrick Nunn, Kostas Sloukas, Jerian Grant, and Cedi Osman alongside Hernangómez, the club’s leadership moved swiftly to reshape the team. Dimitris Giannakopoulos dismissed head coach Ergin Ataman in favor of Zeljko Obradovic. The club also added Guerschon Yabusele from the NBA, Brancou Badio from Valencia, Isaac Bonga from Belgrade, and Sylvain Francisco from ASVEL.

Hernangómez’s new deal keeps his salary secured under Greece’s tax structure, which offers lower rates than countries like Spain. Reflecting on his tenure in Athens since arriving in 2023, the Spanish international emphasized his comfort level with the environment.
“He sido muy feliz aquí durante los últimos tres años,” Hernangómez told EuroHoops, translated to English as noting he has been very happy in Athens over the past three seasons, finding his place among the team, fans, and city while eyeing a championship run.”
Future plans involving Nikola Jokic and life after basketball
Before his move to Europe, Hernangómez spent seven seasons in the NBA, including four years with the Denver Nuggets. Selected 15th overall in the 2016 NBA draft by the Colorado franchise, he crossed paths with Nikola Jokic.

The two former teammates maintain a connection that could soon extend into agricultural pursuits. Hernangómez maintains a sanctuary home in Asturias equipped with his own wine collection, and he plans to consult the Serbian center about expanding his property.
“Tengo una casa en Asturias. Es mi santuario. Allí también tengo vino. Todavía no tengo caballos, pero quiero tener algunos; hablaré con Jokic al respecto,” Hernangómez said, explaining his plans to acquire horses and transition into a simpler family-focused lifestyle once his playing career ends.”
