Brandon Baiye: From Club Bruges Youth Captain to the Red Devils Dream

Brandon Baiye maintient une ambition active de percer au sein de l’équipe nationale des Diables rouges.

Early Development at Club Brugge Alongside Future Stars

Born in Mamfé, Cameroon, Baiye moved to the Netherlands at age three with his mother before relocating to Belgium, where he joined the youth setup at Club Brugge around age twelve. During his formative years in Bruges, he trained alongside players who would later feature prominently in European football, including Loïs Openda and Cyril Ngonge. Reflecting on those developmental years, Baiye noted that Openda displayed exceptional speed well above the average level even during their U16 matches. Despite experiencing typical highs and lows within the club’s academy, Baiye credited figures such as former sporting director Pascal De Maesschalck and youth coaches Rik De Mil and Sven Vermant with providing crucial support during his development.

Captaining Belgium Youth Teams and Earning Professional Recognition

Baiye represented Belgium across various youth international levels from under-15s to under-19s. During his time with the under-15 national team, he played alongside Remco Evenepoel, highlighting the multi-sport athlete’s exceptional physical endurance and competitive mentality before Evenepoel transitioned fully to cycling. Former Belgian international Wesley Sonck appointed Baiye captain of the under-18 national team, a decision that boosted the midfielder's confidence. Sonck pulled Baiye aside during a tournament and assured him of his professional potential, a conversation that shifted the youngster’s mindset upon returning to his club.

Senior Debut Under Ivan Leko and Departure for France

In July 2018, Baiye made his competitive senior debut for Club Brugge during the Belgian Super Cup against Standard Liège, appearing as a substitute in a 2-1 victory. Despite receiving brief minutes during the opening match of the subsequent Jupiler Pro League season, first-team opportunities remained limited amid heavy competition in midfield from Ruud Vormer, Marvelous Nakamba, Mats Rits, and Sofyan Amrabat. Seeking regular senior playing time, Baiye transferred to French Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot in the summer of 2019. Arriving late in the transfer window without a full pre-season and facing a language barrier, he spent his initial campaign primarily with the reserve squad in the French fifth tier.

Revival in Austria and Ambitions for the Red Devils

To secure consistent minutes, Clermont loaned Baiye to their Austrian satellite club, Austria Lustenau, competing in the Austrian Second League. Over a two-season spell in Austria, Baiye helped the club achieve promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga during his second year. That trajectory eventually positioned him for subsequent moves and sustained professional regular minutes. Looking ahead at age 25, Baiye maintains clear international aspirations, expressing confidence in his abilities to eventually contest a place within the senior Belgian national team squad alongside established stars like Lukaku.
