Gorka Abascal has signed a new contract with Real Madrid running through the 2030 season, securing the 16-year-old midfielder’s immediate development within the club’s academy system. The agreement extends the Spanish-born player’s tenure with the ‘Casa Blanca’ and gives the young central midfielder the challenge of becoming the best in the club’s youth academy to earn a spot in the first team in the coming years or continue his career at another European power.
The contract extension guarantees seasons of growth, learning, and the opportunity to impress the Madrid coaching staff. For Colombia, this news is a major boost for the national team’s renewal process, which is also welcomed by coach Néstor Lorenzo as part of his bet on a new generation of players. By the time the 2030 World Cup arrives, Abascal will be 20 years old and could emerge as a breakout star.
International Career and Decision to Represent Colombia
Although Abascal was born in Bilbao, Spain, his mother is Colombian, allowing him to choose which country to represent. Spain’s youth teams, reigning world champions and global football powers, had previously tempted the youngster. Despite the potential prosperity with La Roja,
Abascal chose to wear the yellow jersey and currently trains with the Colombia Sub-17 squad.
Abascal recently started in Colombia’s 2-1 victory over Egypt during a group-stage match of the U18 UEFA Friendship Cup held in Nyon, Switzerland. This tournament serves as preparation for the upcoming World Cup in the category, which will take place in Qatar between November and December.
World Cup Preparations and Squad Roster
Abascal is expected to be called up by coach Fredy Hurtado for the upcoming World Cup tournament. The Colombian youth setup features several other prominent figures alongside Abascal, including Santiago Vallecilla, Éider Carrillo, Miguel Agámez, and José Escorcia.
