Lucciana Pérez Eliminated by Tatjana Maria at W100 Templeton

Peruvian tennis player Lucciana Pérez was eliminated from the W100 Templeton tournament in California after a straight-sets defeat to Germany’s Tatjana Maria, falling 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round on a hard court with a $100,000 prize purse.

First-Round Exit Against Top Seed

Lucciana Pérez bowed out of the Central Coast Tennis Classic after a one-hour, 24-minute defeat to tournament top seed Tatjana Maria. The 21-year-old Peruvian reached the main draw by winning her two qualifying matches—defeating American Kelly Keller 6-4, 6-2, and overcoming Japan’s Mayu Crossley 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the decisive preliminary round. In the round of 32, however, she ran into the experienced German veteran, who currently sits at No. 84 in the WTA rankings and reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2022.

WTA Ranking and Career Context

The early exit affects Pérez’s standing in the professional rankings. Entering the tournament following a semifinal run at the W50 event in Berkeley, California, which pushed her to a career-high No. 319 in the WTA singles rankings, Pérez faced defending points from a year prior. Records show she salvaged five of the 27 points she was set to drop, placing her virtual ranking at No. 334 before the tournament results officially register. Despite the drop, her ascent establishes a reference for Peruvian tennis; another player from the country to reach a comparable singles ranking was Bianca Botto, who climbed to No. 199 in April 2015.

Pérez competes during pauses in her collegiate schedule with Texas A&M University. Her appearances on the international circuit highlight an ongoing balancing act between academic duties and professional aspirations. Speaking about her long-term path, Pérez stated earlier in the year that her ultimate ambition is to win Roland Garros, noting that stepping up to larger tournaments requires continuing to elevate her ranking. With her run in Templeton concluded, Pérez turns her focus toward her next appearance at the W50 Lexington tournament in South Carolina, scheduled for October 5 through 11.
