Academia Reyes Secures Four Championships at Copa Hawks in Durango

The Academia Reyes de Durango captured four division titles at the Copa Hawks basketball tournament, highlighting a strong weekend for the club’s youth squads at the Colegio Americano venue in Durango. Local organizer Raquel Carreón reported that the academy entered six competitive brackets in the tournament, converting their deep tournament run into multiple championship plaques on the hardwood.

Division Titles and Matchup Breakdowns

The academy’s victories spanned both boys and girls youth brackets, showcasing depth across multiple age groups. The championship run kicked off with success in the 2015-2016 girls division, where the young players executed their sets cleanly down the stretch. The 2015-2016 boys squad matched that accomplishment by taking the top spot in their respective bracket, displaying defensive composure against regional opponents.

In the older age groups, the 2012-2013-2014 girls team and the 2009-2010-2011 girls roster also secured first-place finishes. Beyond the four championship squads, Academia Reyes fielded a 2018-2019 mixed team and a 2017 boys roster that completed the tournament schedule with competitive performances and valuable on-court experience.

Coaching Leadership and Program Development

Joel “Sugar” Ortiz heads the basketball program, providing the overarching structure for the academy’s competitive travel and tournament schedules. The title-winning squads operated under the guidance of coaches César Keller, Antonia de la Cruz, and Erika Pérez.

The coaching staff pointed to the focus and discipline shown by players across every roster, particularly among the youngest divisions.

The tournament performance reinforces an active competitive calendar for Durango youth basketball programs. The club’s broader schedule includes the upcoming Ademeba national competition, where the U16 women’s roster from Academia Reyes is set to participate, carrying the momentum from their recent tournament play onto the national stage.
