MLB: Brewers, Padres and Rays seek first World Series titles

Out of the thirty clubs starting a Major League Baseball season, only one ultimately raises the Commissioner’s Trophy. While many franchises have experienced October glory—such as the Miami Marlins winning two titles despite entering the league in 1993, or the Cleveland Guardians sitting in the postseason hunt while carrying a championship drought dating back to 1948—three current MLB franchises have never captured a World Series title.

Milwaukee Brewers: Chasing the Elusive Crown

Founded in 1970, the Milwaukee Brewers have operated largely as a small-market franchise, with their historic peak arriving during the 1980s. Led by shortstop Robin Yount, the Brewers reached their only World Series appearance in 1982, dropping a seven-game series to the St. Louis Cardinals. The club knocked on the door again in 2018, pushing the Los Angeles Dodgers to seven games in the National League Championship Series before bowing out.

San Diego Padres: California Hopefuls Seeking Breakthrough

The San Diego Padres began play in 1969, spending decades living in the shadow of more successful California rivals such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Oakland Athletics. Despite those hurdles, the Padres reached the World Series twice. In 1984, the club fell 4-1 to a Detroit Tigers squad led by Alan Trammell. Fourteen years later, in 1998, they ran into a dominant New York Yankees team that had won 114 games in the regular season and swept San Diego in four straight games. The Padres have not returned to an NLCS since.

Tampa Bay Rays: The Youngest Contender

Established during the 1998 MLB expansion, the Tampa Bay Rays represent the youngest of the three active franchises still seeking their first championship. The Florida-based club captured the American League pennant in 2008 before falling in five games to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. They returned to the Fall Classic during the neutral-site pandemic postseason in 2020 at the Texas Rangers’ stadium, losing in six games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. As baseball continues its marathon schedule, these three franchises remain in pursuit of their inaugural World Series title.
