Eala, the tournament’s top seed and world No. 18, secured the straight-sets victory in one hour and 49 minutes at the venue, keeping her pursuit of a gold medal and an automatic berth at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics firmly on track.
A Slow Start and a Shift in Momentum
Playing in front of a vocal contingent of Filipino supporters wearing blue shirts, the 21-year-old Eala faced immediate pressure from the 143rd-ranked Garland. The opening set saw the top seed drop her serve twice and slip into a 0-40 hole. Eala dug out of the deficit by saving multiple break points, eventually breaking Garland at 5-5 to grind out a 7-5 win in the first frame.
The second set unfolded entirely differently as Eala seized an early break and never relented. She swept six consecutive games to bagel Garland and close out the match in under two hours. Reflecting on the tight opening frame, Eala noted that losses can happen at any moment in tennis, emphasizing that players can never afford to switch off because the outcome remains unpredictable until the final point.
Chasing History and Olympic Qualification
The stakes at the Nagoya Games extend well beyond the podium. The singles gold medalist earns a direct qualification spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Eala enters the final rounds carrying strong momentum, having captured her maiden WTA Tour singles title last month followed by a third-round appearance at the US Open. To compete in Nagoya, she elected to skip the China Open in Beijing.
“Representing the country in events like the SEA Games, Asian Games, and the future Olympics has always been what I value most and part of my dream,” Eala said after the match. “These competitions are tough and challenging, and it’s a super great experience for me.”
Semifinal Outlook and Double Duty
With her quarterfinal win, Eala has matched her bronze-medal finish from the Hangzhou Asian Games three years ago. She returns to the court on Thursday, October 1, for her semifinal fixture.
Her Wednesday schedule also included a grueling women’s doubles match alongside compatriot Shaira Rivera. After a 1-hour-and-34-minute battle, Eala and Rivera fell 5-7, 2-6 to the Chinese pairing of Jiang Xinyu and Yang Zhaoxuan in the round of 16, ending Eala’s run in the doubles draw.
