Ecuadorian football will undergo a radical structural overhaul in 2027, introducing a brand-new League Cup and a postseason playoff system to combat competitive imbalance at the top of the standings. LigaPro president Miguel Ángel Loor announced the sweeping calendar changes following a council of club presidents held in Guayaquil, moving the top flight toward a demanding four-trophy annual schedule modeled after traditional English competitions.
A New Four-Tournament Calendar
The 2027 season will present an atypical calendar featuring four official domestic trophies. Alongside the traditional LigaPro championship, the Copa Ecuador, and the Supercopa Ecuador, clubs will now contest a newly minted Copa de la Liga.
League officials explicitly patterned the schedule after English football traditions, where elite clubs regularly contest four distinct official titles across a single campaign: a primary league title, a multi-tier domestic cup, a league cup, and a season-opening super cup. The Supercopa Ecuador remains the opening fixture of the calendar year, contested at a neutral venue as a single match between the reigning LigaPro champion and the Copa Ecuador holder.
LeaguePro Format and Postseason Playoffs
While the traditional 30-match regular season—split into two 15-game stages—remains intact, the method for crowning a champion shifts significantly. At the conclusion of the 30 rounds, the team finishing first in the overall accumulated table secures a direct berth to the Copa Libertadores. Instead of immediately awarding the domestic league title, the top tier moves into an expanded postseason knockout bracket.
The top four clubs in the regular-season standings advance directly to the quarterfinals as seeded hosts. Teams finishing between fifth and twelfth place must play a single-leg round of 16 playoff hosted by the higher-ranked club, where a draw favors the team with the superior regular-season position. The four survivors of those knockout matches then join the top four seeds in a two-legged quarterfinal phase.
In all quarterfinal series, the higher-seeded side hosts the return leg and advances in the event of a tied aggregate score. Penalty shootouts will be reserved strictly for the semifinal and final rounds.
The Introduction of the Copa de la Liga
Slotted into the middle of the domestic campaign, the newly approved Copa de la Liga involves all 16 Serie A clubs divided into four groups of four. League leadership prioritized structural matchmaking within these round-robin group stages to guarantee marquee rivalries in every cuadrangular—such as Barcelona against Emelec or Liga against Aucas—designed to maximize fan engagement.
The top two finishers from each group advance to a single-elimination knockout bracket to determine the tournament champion. As an added incentive, the winner of the mid-season cup collects an official qualification spot for the following year’s Copa Sudamericana.
Addressing Competitive Dominance at the Summit
The push for a postseason playoff structure stems directly from perceived competitive gaps at the top of the table. Esteban Paz, dirigente of Leones FC and former president of Liga de Quito, noted that structural changes became necessary due to the overwhelming dominance demonstrated by Independiente del Valle. Paz pointed out that runaway leads at the top had threatened regular-season drama, even as competition from the second position downward remained intense.
At the opposite end of the standings, the bottom four clubs—finishing in positions 13 through 16 on the accumulated table—will contest a relegation playoff group. Two clubs will ultimately lose their Serie A status at the end of the 2027 campaign.
