The New York Giants have traded for Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy in a deal utilizing a 2027 fifth-round draft pick, filling a roster void following an injury to Jaxson Dart. While the acquisition brings the former Michigan standout to the Big Apple, head coach John Harbaugh confirmed that veteran Jameis Winston remains the team’s starting quarterback.
Giants Land J.J. McCarthy From Minnesota
The New York Giants secured quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a fifth-round selection in the 2027 NFL Draft. Selected 10th overall by Minnesota in the 2024 NFL Draft, McCarthy experienced a difficult tenure with the Vikings. He missed his entire rookie season due to a meniscus tear and subsequently slipped behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz on the depth chart heading into the current campaign.
The transaction reunites McCarthy with the Harbaugh football family tree. McCarthy played college football for Michigan and won a national championship under Jim Harbaugh until 2023. John Harbaugh, head coach of the Giants and brother to Jim, likely consulted his sibling, the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, before finalizing the trade with Minnesota.

John Harbaugh Confirms Jameis Winston Stays Starter
Despite the addition of McCarthy, John Harbaugh moved quickly to clarify the hierarchy of the quarterback room. Speaking after the Giants’ 12-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the head coach affirmed that Winston keeps the starting job.
“Jameis is the starter. You asked me that on Sunday night. He is our starting quarterback, and that’s how we’re going to handle it,” John Harbaugh said. “We’re going to be ready for the next game and beyond. I’m excited about Jameis… I’m excited about where this can go, and over time we’ll have a chance to build the team around Jameis’s strengths.”
Star Edge Rusher Brian Burns Suffer Season-Ending Injury
While the franchise reinforced its quarterback depth, the Giants suffered a major blow to their defensive unit. Star edge rusher Brian Burns tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the fourth quarter of the win against the Titans. Burns had played through a lingering ankle injury sustained the previous week before suffering the severe knee tear.
“Losing your quarterback one week and potentially your best defensive player the next—that’s shocking,” John Harbaugh said prior to receiving the final medical confirmation on Monday. Burns recorded 16.5 sacks last season, trailing only Myles Garrett’s 23 sacks.
Kayvon Thibodeaux Steps Into Expanded Defensive Role
With Burns sidelined for the remainder of the season, Kayvon Thibodeaux will step back into a primary starting role on the edge of the New York defense. Thibodeaux enters the final year of his rookie contract looking to anchor the pass rush and establish value for a prospective extension.
