E.J. Montgomery returns to Aomori Watts to aim for the postseason

Aomori WatTS forward E.J. Montgomery is returning to the club for another campaign, bringing a renewed focus on his perimeter shooting as the team sets its sights on a deeper postseason run. Born in September 1999 in the United States, Montgomery is preparing for his second stint with the professional basketball franchise, highlighting a roster that features several familiar faces from the 2023–24 season.

Roots in Basketball and the Path to the Pros

Growing up immersed in the sport, Montgomery’s introduction to basketball came naturally through his family. Both of his parents played and coached the game, while his two older sisters also competed on the court. “My parents played basketball and were also coaches, so I grew up surrounded by it from a young age,” Montgomery said. “My two older sisters also played, and seeing that made me want to try it myself. I fell in love with the game, wanted to reach higher levels, and decided to become a professional player.”

After experiencing his initial stint with the Aomori WatTS, Montgomery expressed a strong affinity for Japan and the environment within the club. His primary objective upon returning is clear: helping guide the team back to the playoffs alongside the local booster base.

“I love Japan, and I had a wonderful experience the last time I was in Aomori, so I wanted to play here again,” Montgomery said. “I want to reach the playoffs once more with the Aomori WatTS. I want to fight together with everyone in Aomori to aim for the postseason.”

One notable advantage for the roster heading into the new campaign is continuity. Playing alongside several teammates from the 2023–24 season has streamlined the adjustment period, allowing the group to find its rhythm more efficiently.

“Playing with guys I’ve shared the court with before helps us get used to playing as a team much faster,” Montgomery noted. “The difference between then and now is that everyone seems much more relaxed and is playing with greater confidence.”

Sharpening the Three-Point Shot

On the court, Montgomery is dedicating extra time to expanding his offensive repertoire. As a power forward wearing number 7, he has made consistency from beyond the arc a primary daily objective, urging supporters to watch for his perimeter development.

“I’ve been working on improving my three-point shot more and more, so I want people to pay attention to that,” Montgomery said. “It’s something I work on every single day to ensure I can hit them at a higher percentage.”
