Jan Boskamp discusses his bond with Feyenoord in new magazine

Roots Formed Inside De Kuip at Age Four

Former player, former manager, and analyst Jan Boskamp has discussed his bond with clubs in Rotterdam in an interview within the new Feyenoord Magazine.

Growing up in Rotterdam with a father who worked as a stadium steward, Boskamp’s bond with the club formed at approximately four years of age inside De Kuip. Reflecting on his earliest memories attending matches with his father—who wore a distinctive cap on the stands—Boskamp described the enduring nature of his fandom.

Even after subpar performances, that deep-rooted connection remains intact. In the magazine interview, he explained that while he appreciates good football overall, attending Feyenoord matches is purely driven by the desire to see the team win.

From Local Amateur Roots to Fred Blankemeijer’s Recruitment

Boskamp’s association with the club extends far beyond the stands, encompassing a long history as a youth player and eventual squad member.

At age 13, he completed a trial internship with Feyenoord but initially chose to remain with his local amateur club, HOV. He later joined Sparta, featuring in a specially organized friendly match for the first team before Fred Blankemeijer approached him to secure a transfer.

Groundkeeper Duties and Sharing the Pitch with Coen Moulijn

Upon moving to Feyenoord, Boskamp signed a youth contract and worked concurrently as a groundkeeper at Varkenoord, where he occasionally rested near the baseball field located at the back of the complex.

During his playing career, he witnessed various eras of the club, sharing the pitch with legendary figures such as Coen Moulijn, Jo Walhout, Gerard Kerkum, and Wim Jansen. He recalled how Moulijn was considered a sacred figure for both himself and Jansen, with players frequently organizing extra training sessions alongside him.

Health Battles and the Frustration of Watching From Afar

Describing the matchday atmosphere in De Kuip, Boskamp emphasized the unique sense of unity among supporters, noting that he currently watches matches from one of the stadium’s private units.

Due to health considerations over the preceding 18 months, he attended only four matches in person, missing the intense emotional highs and lows of live attendance. He noted that watching on television lacks the visceral reaction of the stands, where losses prompt him to vent during the drive home.
