His arrival marks a continuation of the talent drain affecting Cuban baseball, making him the eighth member of Cuba’s 2025 Under-18 World Cup roster to leave the country in search of North American opportunities.
International Tournaments and Domestic Statistics
During the Under-18 World Cup held in Okinawa, Japan, Forteza appeared in three games for the Cuban national team. He finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, a 3.36 earned run average, and seven strikeouts across 8.1 innings pitched. His performance included a dominant five-inning outing against South Africa in his debut, allowing just one hit to secure a 10-0 victory. He also earned the win in a 4-3 consolation victory over Germany as Cuba finished seventh in the tournament.
Domestically, Forteza pitched for Sancti Spíritus during the 64th National Series spanning the 2025-2026 season. In six appearances and 15 innings of work, he recorded an 0-3 record and a 7.20 ERA.
The Path to Free Agency in the Dominican Republic
Forteza is following the established route taken by his Under-18 teammates to secure professional representation. By establishing residency in the Dominican Republic, players become eligible as international free agents to sign with MLB organizations during official signing periods.
The exodus from the 2025 World Cup squad began in July 2025 when left-handed pitcher César Morales of Villa Clara departed for Santo Domingo to train under the Wasserman agency.
