From a Modest Childhood to Football Leaks
Long before his name was linked to high-stakes Premier League disciplinary hearings, Pinto grew up in modest circumstances in Vila Nova de Gaia, situated across the Douro River from Porto on the bank of the river. His former geography teacher, Mario Falcao, remembers him as an ordinary pupil at Escola Secundaria Almeida Garrett with a distinct talent for computers who produced excellent work when he focused his attention.
Pinto established his Football Leaks website in 2015 with the stated goal of exposing the hidden side of football
. Operating under the pseudonym “John,” he made his first contact with Antonio Varela, a journalist at the Portuguese sports newspaper Record.

Pinto eventually established contact with Rafael Buschmann, a journalist at the German magazine Der Spiegel, sharing tens of millions of documents comprising more than three terabytes of information with media organizations in the European Investigative Collaborations consortium.

The cache included more than 70 million documents according to The Guardian, while the BBC reported that the leaked material included internal emails about sponsorship deals and payments involving Manchester City detailing sponsorship arrangements, and discussions regarding a proposed European Super League.
