At the 2026 South American Games, Argentine tennis player Lautaro Midón secured a silver medal in the men’s doubles tournament and advanced to the men’s singles final, adding two podium finishes to the nation’s medal count at the regional multi-sport event.
Competing at the Hipódromo Óvalo venue in Rosario, the 22-year-old Midón advanced to the singles gold-medal match after defeating fellow Argentine competitor Luciano Ambrogi by scores of 6-3 and 7-6 (9-7) in a semifinal that lasted two hours and five minutes. After claiming the opening set, Midón established a 4-1 lead in the second set before Ambrogi mounted a comeback to force a tiebreak. Midón eventually secured the victory on his fourth match point.
With the win, Midón guaranteed himself a medal in the singles draw and scheduled a final match against compatriot Juan Manuel La Serna. La Serna advanced to the title match by defeating Colombia’s John Echeverría in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1. The men’s singles final is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. local time on Court 5 at the Hipódromo Óvalo.
The success in singles reflects a strong overall performance by the Argentine tennis delegation at the Santa Fe 2026 South American Games, where the team is guaranteed at least three medals in the singles competitions. In addition to the all-Argentine men’s final between Midón and La Serna, Jazmín Ortenzi reached the women’s singles final, where she is set to face Peru’s Dana Guzmán.
Bronze medal matches in singles also feature Argentine representation. Luciano Ambrogi will face John Echeverría, while Luciana Moyano is slated to play Guyana’s Sachia Vickery.
In the men’s doubles competition, held Friday afternoon, Midón partnered with La Serna to face the Colombian duo of Sebastián Gómez and Cristian Rodríguez in the final. The Argentine pair won the opening set 6-2, but the Colombians leveled the match by taking the second set 7-6 (13-11). Gómez and Rodríguez ultimately claimed the gold medal by winning the decisive super tiebreak 10-7, leaving Midón and La Serna with the silver.
The tournament continues Saturday with the remaining singles finals and medal matches at the Hipódromo Óvalo complex.
