Reporters on site were informed that the briefing would instead take place after the squad completed their morning training session.
That training session, booked for 10:00 BST, came and went without the team appearing. Reporters relocated from the venue to the squad’s hotel in anticipation of an official update as the players remained locked behind closed doors in a team meeting.
Emergency Hotel Meetings and Unconfirmed Player Resistance
During the extended hotel discussions, unconfirmed reports emerged that several squad members, including goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, had expressed a desire to withdraw from the fixture entirely. Those internal disagreements triggered widespread questions over whether the national team would fulfill the fixture commitment.

More than five hours after the initial briefing was supposed to get underway, Football Association of Ireland CEO David Courell stepped before reporters to clear the air. Flanked by Hallgrimsson and the FAI Director of Football, Courell confirmed that the squad had held a formal vote and passed by a significant majority to play the game.
Following the leadership update, the postponed media conference was officially rescheduled at the Nagyerdei Stadion for 14:30, with the team’s training session immediately following the media engagements.
